The Office of Institutional Assessment and Effectiveness (OIAE) plays a crucial role in advancing the mission, values, and strategic initiatives of the University of St. Thomas by providing essential research, support, and coordination in the areas of accreditation and assessment.

To achieve this mission, the OIAE focuses on several key activities: collecting, analyzing, and distributing relevant research; supporting the campus through survey research and managing the course evaluation process; and coordinating a comprehensive system of Institutional Effectiveness Plans that align with UST’s strategic goals.

Additionally, the OIAE offers guidance throughout the assessment cycle, consulting with departments and programs on research projects to ensure data validity, and facilitating the reaffirmation of accreditation processes with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).  Along with closing the assessment loop and ensuring research informs decision-making, the OIAE also oversees the successful implementation and continuous assessment of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

SACSOC LogoThe University of St. Thomas is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees. The University of St. Thomas also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels.

Questions about the accreditation of the University of St. Thomas may be directed in writing to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, GA 30033-4097, by calling (404) 679-4500, or by using information available on SACSCOC’s website (www.sacscoc.org).

All SACSCOC-accredited universities must apply for reaffirmation of accreditation every ten years.

Annual Institutional Effectiveness (IE) plans are required by all academic and administrative departments. The annual plan template and resource guides are available on the Office of Institutional Assessment and Effectiveness website. The template is designed to mimic the cycle of ongoing improvement beginning with the previous year’s outcomes and student learning outcomes (SLOs), the assessment and results of the progress toward those outcomes and SLOs, and plans for the upcoming year.

To learn more about the accrediting process, visit the SACSCOC’s website (www.sacscoc.org).

Planning documents for the 10-year reaffirmation of accreditation:

  • The Principles of Accreditation: Any university that is accredited by SACSCOC must be in compliance with the Principles of Accreditation, which are the foundations for an institution's quality enhancement. This document includes all of the nearly 100 principles as of 2012.
  • The Handbook for Institutions Seeking Reaffirmation: All SACSCOC-accredited universities must apply for reaffirmation of accreditation every ten years. The Handbook for Institutions Seeking Reaffirmation is designed to guide institutions through the reaffirmation process, and outlines the four major steps in the quest for reaffirmation in (1) building a foundation of understanding as the institution starts the process, (2) preparing for the off-site review, (3) preparing for the on-site review, and (4) completing the reaffirmation process.
  • The Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation: The SACSCOC reaccreditation process is a major undertaking for any university. The Resource Manual for the Principles of Accreditation is designed (1) to provide guidance to institutions as they seek to identify strategies for documenting compliance with commission requirements and standards and (2) to be a resource in the training of review team members and trustees as they strive to apply the Principles fairly and consistently.

The University of St. Thomas's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), "Educating for Purpose (E4P): Faith, Reason, Life," aims to integrate Catholic Social Teaching (CST) into the university experience. This initiative, rooted in the university's mission and strategic plan, seeks to enhance student learning and success by connecting faith, reason, and real-world issues. The plan outlines specific learning outcomes, assessment strategies, and resource allocation for a five-year implementation period. Through these efforts, the university aims to cultivate a vibrant Catholic culture and prepare students to lead ethically and contribute to the common good. The E4P Hub will serve as a central resource and physical meeting place, coordinating faculty training, student engagement, and curriculum enhancements.

For more information or questions about the QEP, contact Dr. Christopher Born (christopher.born@stthom.edu) or Dr. Jo Anne Meier-Marquis (meierj@stthom.edu).
